In a successful rewilding effort — which was rife with Covid and weather-related challenges — the California Red-Legged Frog project translocated frog eggs from Baja California, Mexico, to San Diego and Riverside, California, in March 2021.
The frogs were returned to their natural habitat after they disappeared from the region decades ago due to habitat destruction, disease and invasive species.
Scientists are using Song Meter SM4s to learn more about the seasonal patterns of the threatened amphibian’s calls. Song Meters are also in place at newly created wetlands to monitor the activity and reproductive behaviour of newly arrived frogs.
Beginning in late May, the San Diego Natural History Museum will host an exhibition to highlight these efforts, and it will include a Song Meter SM4 in the display.
