The Australian Powerful Owl is an endangered species and warrants specific management for conservation. There is currently very little information known about the genetic makeup of this species. Genetic potential is critical to species survival; knowing how closely related individuals and communities are will improve our understanding of the owl's biology, and the future needs of the species include maintaining owls throughout their entire range.

We are conducting a study on the genetic variability of the Powerful Owl over its range, which includes Victoria, New South Wales and Southern Queensland. This information is critically important in building our understanding of these amazing birds.

We require as many Powerful Owl feather samples as possible with known locations to ensure the success of the study.

Feathers, whether recently found on the ground or kept for many years, road kills and injured birds are all excellent sources of Powerful Owl DNA and will provide valuable information.

If you have any information about the location of live, injured* or dead Powerful Owls, Barking Owls or Boobook Owls, and / or samples from any of these species such as feathers or tissues, please contact us.

* if injured birds are located please contact Dr David Middleton at Healesville Sanctuary as soon as possible
